The urgent need for sustainable and energy-efficient refrigeration solutions is driving the adoption of low Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerants worldwide. Honeywell's L40X (R-455A) refrigerant represents a significant advancement in this area, offering a compelling balance of performance and environmental benefits. This paper explores the successful implementation of R-455A in a 4,200m² supermarket in Corsica, showcasing how it addresses the unique challenges of commercial refrigeration and contributes to the EU's energy efficiency and carbon reduction targets.
Supermarkets demand reliable, efficient refrigeration to maintain optimal temperatures for a variety of perishable goods while minimizing environmental impact. Our case study focuses on a sophisticated refrigeration system comprised of three central units designed to meet these demands using R-455A.
The installation features two medium temperature (MT) units, each with a capacity of 300 kW, utilizing an R-455A chiller to produce cooled water at -8 °C to -4 °C. This system ensures efficient cooling across the supermarket's various sections, supporting both energy efficiency and product preservation.
A glycol water-loop system, using Friogel Neo, distributes medium temperature cooling to refrigerated displays throughout the supermarket.
Additionally, a separate water-loop system services cold rooms and preparation areas, maintaining strict temperature controls essential for food safety and quality.
A crucial part of the setup is the 60 kW low temperature (LT) direct expansion (DX) unit, which operates efficiently from -30 °C to +42 °C.
The implementation of R-455A in this supermarket highlights its versatility and effectiveness in a commercial setting. By choosing Honeywell's L40X refrigerant, the supermarket not only meets current environmental standards but also supports the EU’s objectives under the Energy Efficiency Directive (EED) and the European Green Deal. These initiatives aim to reduce energy consumption and achieve climate neutrality by 2050.
This paper will provide a detailed examination of the technical aspects, installation process, operational performance, and environmental and economic benefits of the R-455A system. The findings aim to guide similar projects, promoting broader adoption of low GWP refrigerants in commercial refrigeration and contributing to the EU’s ambitious energy and climate goals.
