Beschreibung

The European Union's new F-gas Regulation 573/2024, which came into force on March 11, 2024, represents a significant step forward in the EU's climate action strategy. This regulation is a comprehensive update to previous legislation, aiming to further reduce emissions of fluorinated greenhouse gases (F-gases) which are potent contributors to global warming. The regulation introduces stricter controls on the use and sale of F-gases and places greater emphasis on the recovery and recycling of these substances. It also sets out new conditions for the production, import, and export of F-gases, ensuring that only those with a proven track record in handling these substances can operate in the market. It includes also a comprehensive ban on the use of fluorinated gases in certain products. This ban affects several categories where it is technologically and economically feasible to switch to alternatives that do not contain harmful F-gases. The regulation also encourages the transition to natural refrigerants and other alternatives with lower climate impact. This shift is expected to drive innovation in the refrigeration and air conditioning sectors, leading to the development of new, more energy-efficient technologies. Furthermore, the regulation strengthens the rules on containment, use, recovery, recycling, regeneration, and destruction of F-gases. It introduces new provisions on extended producer responsibility, certification, and training, as well as enhanced measures for leak detection and repair. The implementation of Regulation 573/2024 will not only contribute to the EU's climate goals but also promote technological advancement and environmental sustainability. It is a clear indication of the EU's commitment to leading the way in the global effort to combat climate change.
